Ayers/Ayres Sightings
Florida: 1850 and before
![]()
Welcome to the "Ayers/Ayres Sightings" Web Site. Over the years, while researching my wife's genealogy, I have been collecting information about persons named Ayers/Ayres who lived in Florida in 1850 or before. I am hoping that sooner or later these isolated pieces of data with fall into place and I will be able to identify my wife's great grandfather. I am publishing this web site so that others may use the data that I've discovered and perhaps be able to contribute additional Ayers/Ayres sightings.
If you are interested, here is the Maxfield
Ayers story that is my jumping off point.

As most of you know, spelling in old records can
be something of an art form. I have encountered Ayers, Ayres, Ayrs, Ayr
Aires, Airs, Air, Ayre, Ayars, Aris, and an occasional Eyre, often with
different
spellings
for the same person. I've decided to finesse the problem on this site
by
using the generic "Ayers/Ayres".
In addition to these Ayers/Ayres variants, some
researchers contend that the English surname Hair is an Ayers variant.
I have begun research on Hair (and its variants Haar, Haire, Hare,
Harr, Haer, Hahr, Hayer, Hayre, Heier, Herr, Heyer, and Hier) in
Florida before 1850 but I have not reached any conclusion concerning
adding Hair to this web site.
Dates should be viewed as best estimates based on
the record.
I believe that all of these sightings represent
unique people. There is always the problem, of course, that there may
be
multiple individuals with the same name.
I have identified Dr. Samuel R. and Samuel R. as
unique individuals. They may be the same person.
There are only two identified familial relationships
among the names in the Sightings table; Sophia (Ayres) Crane is
Charlotte's
daughter and Martha I is the mother of Martha II and Maxfield.
Additional
family information, where available from census records, can be found
by
clicking on the "family" links.
